This page is an attempt to make a plan for what to do at the 40m in the next couple years so that we're maximally useful to the Enhanced LIGO/ Advanced LIGO efforts. In the past, the 40m mission has been mainly to do AdvLIGO ASC/LSC prototyping, but since we all agree that prototyping Enhanced LIGO ideas at the 40m is critical, we should explicitly state this here.

The High-Level List

  1. DC Readout on a PR-FPMI (LIGO-I like) interferometer.
  2. Advanced LIGO LSC scheme.
  3. DC Readout on a DRSE interferometer.
  4. Advanced LIGO ASC scheme (control scheme, new WFS, software, etc.)

Advanced LIGO LSC

We have to get the DRSE interferometer locking again.

Afterwards, we need to do further modeling on the AdvLIGO LSC & ASC schemes so that we can pick a control scheme and then figure out how to prototype this on the 40m. Then we have to do a big in-vac overhaul of all the mirror positions and reflectivities to get it to be a useful prototype and then change all the electronics to work at the new modulations frequencies and then get all the locking back together.

This overhaul is probably a good opportunity to get the new CDS infrastructure prototyped.

DC Readout ala Enhanced LIGO

The Enhanced LIGO interferometers will all run as LIGO-I interferometers but with an OMC on the output and DC readout of the DARM DOF. The primary mission of the 40m in the near term is to get this working and characterized. See the 40m DC_Readout page for details on the planned measurements. We need input from the Enhanced LIGO design team to figure out exactly what this program is.

DC Readout on DRSE

After we get good locking of the DRSE IFO we should get the noise down to within a couple orders of magnitude of the Bench model and then verify all of the transfer functions and noise couplings that we can think of.

  1. DC Wavefront Sensing - dither/demodulate suspended optics to do DC alignment of the IFO. (Lead - V. Frolov)

  2. Demonstrate Squeezing on some kind of suspended IFO. (Lead - K. Goda)
