We should avoid Olympus. Olympus is going to quit from Full DSLR categoly in future, focusing on compact DSLRs and high-end point-and-shoot cameras.
I like Canon's interface but don't Nikon's.
Recommendation: Canon EOS Rebel T3i $699@Amazon

T3i

Cons: Variangle LCD useful for unusual angles, in-chamber photos, OSEM checking, etc.

Comparison between D3100, D5100, Canon, Olympus XZ-1 (Koji's)

D3100 isn't so great even compared with KA's compact camera. D5100 and Canon T4i looks fine.
T4i's resolution for the metalic parts looks great.
