Free Software

  1. X-Code (~2.4 GB): Install from the Leopard/Snow Leopard DVD. Prerequisite for Macports.
  2. MacPorts: an automated package management software. Makes it easy for you to get lots of Unix/Linux stuff. Most of the following packages are available through MacPorts.

  3. Porticus: MacPorts GUI.

  4. Aquamacs: better than X-Emacs or Carbon Emacs.
  5. BibDesk

  6. Gimp
  7. Subversion
  8. Google Picasa
  9. TexShop this and BibDesk you should get as part of MacTex, not MacPorts.
